Other Characters:

Character Name: Meowth
Series: Pokemon (anime)
Age: He's a Pokemon, so it's hard to say, but he's the mental equivalent of someone in their thirties.
From When?: Advanced Generation 145: Pasta La Vista

Inmate/Warden: Inmate; Despite his (and his entire team's) capacity for good, Meowth still actively chooses to do the wrong thing and can't seem to be deterred from this no matter how many times he's presented with alternate options.

Arrival: Snatched at the moment of his death, because look there's only so many times you can be sent blasting off again before it (A. Becomes fatal or (B. Someone steps in and gives you the big Come to Arceus.

Abilities/Powers:

Meowth has very little in terms of abilities for a Pokemon, having used up most of his "smarts" to learn how to walk on two legs and talk human- which are abilities in themselves. Most notably, he can bite and use his claws for attacks, and the major thing that differentiates his claw attacks from a normal cat's is that when he uses them, his claws extend outwards about two inches and glow. With his powers limited, however, his claw and bite attacks can only be as effective as a normal cat's.

He is extremely durable, though not immortal, capable of surviving long falls, electric attacks, fire, and various other things no normal animal would be able to survive, with no lasting damage... Except for the part where HE FINALLY ENDED UP DYING AND ENDED UP ON THE BARGE, so it's obviously not impossible to murder him or damage him to the point of needing intensive care, regardless of any power nerfs.

He can speak fluent Pokemon, as well as "human," however as there are no Pokemon, this ability isn't very useful. However, his knowledge of Pokemon-Speak would likely make it kind of easy to understand other animals (as many Pokemon actually communicate with grunts and growls like normal animals), but it's like knowing fluent Latin and having a single-semester knowledge of various romance languages- you're not gonna understand everything and you're going to mistranslate a lot.

He is also extremely intelligent and capable of building various scraps of tech, including mechas and other vehicles out of things he finds lying around, which he admittedly only uses for the stupidest schemes imaginable and not for anything productive.

Personality: It's stated very early in the series that Pokemon aren't fundamentally bad, only their masters are bad, and while this is subverted multiple times in the series, Meowth is one of the earliest subversions, going as far as to say that even though he doesn't have a trainer, he's always been a rat.

This is not as true as he wishes it was.

On the surface, Meowth is exactly as he appears, which is everything you'd expect from a cat in media. He's a smarmy wiseass with a wit as sharp as his claws, although he mostly uses it for extremely lame (yet clever) puns and exudes a Pesci-esque sense of gangster charm. That same charm gives him something of an appeal when he puts his mind to it, as shown by his ability to manipulate Pokemon (and sometimes people) into doing whatever he asks them to do just by putting on the theatrics a bit. He's streetwise, an artful Dodger if there ever was one, and while he's had to learn a lot through pain and suffering and continues to learn through those methods, he's gotten good at thinking on his feet. Like the cliche says, he always lands on his feet (even when he lands on his face), and will keep at a goal relentlessly. This makes him pigheaded and stubborn to the point of blind stupidity, especially since his goals generally tend to be either ridiculous or unattainable by normal standards, but he, as a general rule, never says die.

Meowth has a habit of dreaming big and even when the schemes are seemingly simple, he goes all out to achieve them, something he shares with his fellow Team Rocket members, who have taken excessive measures to achieve small goals to new heights with their outlandish inventions. Subtlety is for other people- if he can't go big, he goes home. As an attention-seeker, Meowth lives to be noticed so whatever will get him noticed and recognized is what he goes with. His passion and verve are his greatest assets even if he has no idea how to utilize or channel either properly.

Intelligent, but lacking in common sense, Meowth fluctuates between moments of brilliance (he taught himself to speak and walk like a human) and utter idiocy (which is mostly due to his stubbornness and pride). He's good at improvising and has shown on more than one occasion that he might actually be the smartest member of the TRio- he's actually the one that PILOTS those giant mechas they always bring out, which is rather impressive for the one member of the team who barely has thumbs.

He might not be the most skilled thief or even a decent villain (neither are Jessie or James), but he throws himself into it whole-heartedly, and yet he still has no problem working for the side of good and partnering up with his enemies. Fundamentally, Meowth isn't bad so much as he wants respect and attention and has chosen Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, as the be-all and end-all of his sense of self-worth. If the Boss recognizes him as Top Cat, then surely that's what he is. Being devastated by the love of his life after working so hard to please her left a mark on him and so he holds himself to the standard of proving that she was wrong. Due to his dedication to proving to Giovanni he's worth a damn, he often misses the fact that he's achieved acceptance with Jessie and James to such an extent that even when he acknowledges that they're the only people who ever really cared about him, it doesn't stop him from pursuing his goals. However, this may be just as much his dedication to them as it is anything- after all, Team Rocket would be listless if they weren't a part of Team Rocket anymore. They're defined by that and thus, they keep on. However, he has, on several occasions, thought of leaving Team Rocket in order to pursue some other flights of fancy, but, in the end, it's Jessie and James he comes back to.

Bitchy, bossy, and an all-around loud-mouth, Meowth's tendency to keep it "big and loud" extends to his ability to talk as much (if not more) as his scheming does. He might not get the biggest chunk of the motto, but you're well aware of his existence and his general disregard for Jessie and James's competence and tendency to boss them around (sometimes they even listen) proves that he places himself high on their pecking order. Early on, Meowth was actually written as the leader with Jessie and James as his henchmen, but now they're usually portrayed as equals with Jessie, more often than not, taking the leadership role. Even so, Meowth and Jessie will often butt heads over dominance.

One of the most obvious chunks of Meowth's character is his ridiculous fixation on love, often falling into deep, intense love with another Pokemon (or, in one case, a human) at least once a season. These fixations come on extremely quickly and, in a Pokemon's case, happen at first sight. He can't resist a pretty female Pokemon and when he falls, he falls hard, putting his skill at dramatics to the test. He's gone ridiculously out of his way to please females and usually he ends up shut down or abandoned by the end of the episode, with all of his hard work and dedication thrown to the wayside. This even manifests in a paternal way with Togepi, who he took care of as an egg when Team Rocket stole it from Ash and his friends. Whether platonic or romantic, Meowth is extremely protective of anything he loves- the one exception seem to be Jessie and James, whom he does care for deeply, but the three of them show their affection more with abuse than anything else. He and James even don't worry too much about Jessie when the two are separated from her on two occasions, expressing that Jessie is more of a danger to those around her than anyone might be a danger to her.

Meowth is fully capable of being a hero if he chose to be and, in fact, shows a degree of competence that he never shows when he's being a bad guy when he chooses to do good, often getting extremely brutal and cunning with his attacks when in the defense of something other than himself or his own selfish means. He's actually quite noble when he puts his mind to be, but, unfortunately, nobility doesn't earn him respect and fame and fortune with little effort, and, at the end of the day, it's those things he wants out of life.

However, he does have a certain amount of respect for his enemies and enough sense of honor to acknowledge it, most obvious in his rivalry with Ash's Pikachu, who he and his partners have been trying to abduct and turn over to the Boss for years. Despite the fact that he and the little electric rat are doomed to a, shall we say, "cat and mouse" conflict, Meowth has expressed a great deal of respect and admiration for Pikachu's kindness, even second-guessing his more sneaky methods of abducting him and, in one case, actually feeling guilt for manipulating him. He also develops a begrudging amount of respect for Tyson's Meowth, who had previously insulted and defeated him, when he learned of their shared sordid history with their evolved form Persian.

Due to his ability to speak being a point of pride with him, he makes no effort to hide it, unless forced to. He isn't perturbed at all about people finding his ability to talk strange and will talk in front of anyone (sometimes even just to himself), usually acting awkward or proud about it, depending on the situation, when called out. Forcing him to shut his mouth, however, is an exercise in extreme difficulty as Meowth tends to be temperamental and has a bad habit of letting his ability to speak slip out when it shouldn't.

Speaking of pride, the fact that he's a free Pokemon without a legitimate trainer is a huge issue with him, to the point where he actively forgets he is a Pokemon sometimes until it's pointed out. He expects to be treated like a human and gets annoyed when people suggest that Jessie and James are his trainers or that he even needs a trainer. Being able to talk and walk upright put him ahead of the game. However, he seems to have no qualms about being Giovanni's personal pet to the point where that seems to be his ultimate endgame, showing that he might have less issue with being owned and more issue with being owned by someone whose attentions won't give him a sense of status (it's also probably worthy of note that Meowth has, as he's wont to do, likely not considered the true ramifications of being Giovanni's pet). It should also be noted that Meowth doesn't react to things like a cat would- in fact, his reactions tend to be extremely human and while he might be easily distracted by a ball of yarn or something shiny, he rarely shows a more catlike side of himself. He's just a tiny, furry human. (Albeit one that would not say no to someone petting him- he's a sucker for affection.)

At his core, Meowth is a dreamer, living an idyllic fantasy life to such a great extent that it's evident he has no clue how things really are in the real world- this is clear by his mental portrayals of Giovanni, who he sees as a simple man who can be easily swayed by the most mundane of gifts, when, in reality, Giovanni is only interested in that which can help him take over the world in the most efficient way. In fact, Meowth almost always puts himself against plans the boss would legitimately like to achieve out of his own sense of morality, such as in Mewtwo Returns when he stands with Metwo and the clones, rather than Giovanni and Team Rocket. While skewed, he does have morals, as well as a poetic side that comes out especially whenever he looks at a full moon. He has aspects of a philosopher in him and can often manage great insights when he feels compelled to.

Barge Reactions: Meowth won't take kindly to having been brought here without Jessie and James, especially when he's expected to be redeemed, and that will be his biggest sticking point, and will be the first really big hurdle to overcome, as they tend to make decisions as a team and him being on his own seems rude and unfair and kind of tricky, if you ask him. Being a novelty will be intriguing to him at first and then slowly wear on him when he has to explain what a Pokemon is for the fiftieth time. He's pretty capable of rolling with the punches of just about anything, however... Including the idea that he's fictional, because he often references being on a TV show in canon.

Path to Redemption: The problem of Meowth isn't so much that he's a bad person- rather, he does bad things and doesn't seem to care that he's more than capable of being good and seems either oblivious to his better qualities (like his loyalty and his dedication) or prefers not to acknowledge them, because they're not getting him what he wants. Since Meowth is a sucker for praise and validation, the first and main path should be focus on giving him any kind of positive reinforcement when he makes correct choices. Validating his better qualities will go a long way over pointing out his bad ones. He knows he's the worst. He's the best at being the worst.

The second path is that he needs to fully disengage from his fantasy of "The Boss" and acknowledge that the relationship is one-sided, toxic, and, frankly, keeping him mired in evil. It'll be a hard road to get him to accept this as he hasn't necessarily had any proof beyond the threat of punishment if he fails... And he's never failed so hard that Giovanni has actually done anything to him, so clearly The Boss is into him. (No, he's not.)

The third and final path is providing options for a different life, and this will be the hardest one, as Meowth, Jessie, and James have had that option placed in front of them many times and still chose to go back to crime. It's going to take a lot of work and a lot of conversation to get him to a point where he feels he can go back home and have a purpose that isn't about crime, and a warden won't just being trying to convince him, but will have to consider that whatever redemptive path he takes with him will have to work for Jessie and James, as well. Congrats, future Warden- you are effectively redeeming three people.
